Black Hawk Up! Helicopter Alliance Brings Global Aviation Strategy to FMV VŠE

Department of International Business is happy to share that students at the Faculty of International Relations of the Prague University of Economics and Business had the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the world of international aviation, defence, and helicopter modernisation through a guest lecture by Jonathan Castorena from Helicopter Alliance, a.s.

The lecture took place as part of the International Entrepreneurship course in the bachelor’s program International Business (IBB) and offered students a rare look behind the scenes of a highly specialised global industry. Rather than discussing international strategy only in theory, students were able to hear directly from a company that operates in complex international markets where technology, security, geopolitics and business all meet.

Although Helicopter Alliance operates globally, the company has strong Czech roots. Today, Helicopter Alliance is building its position around the modernisation of the legendary Black Hawk helicopter platform for both military and civilian use.

The session was led by Jonathan Castorena, Vice President for International Business and Sales at Helicopter Alliance. Originally from Texas, Jonathan brought more than 20 years of helicopter industry experience to the classroom, including expertise in the production and modernisation of Bell helicopters and, more recently, Black Hawk helicopters. His engaging and practical presentation made a complex industry highly accessible and gave students a clear view of how international aviation projects are developed, negotiated and delivered.

During the lecture, Jonathan introduced students to the dynamics of the global helicopter market, current trends in the defence industry and the future potential of Black Hawk helicopters. A particularly interesting part of the discussion focused on the modernisation of older aircraft and their adaptation for a wide range of missions, from military operations to police, firefighting and emergency response. These capabilities are not only strategically important but also highly relevant in real crisis situations, as recently demonstrated by a Black Hawk helicopter being used in firefighting operations in Bohemian Switzerland.

Overall, the lecture provided FMV VŠE students with a highly practical connection between international trade, security policy, risk management and technological innovation. It showed how Czech-owned companies can play an active role in global industries and how aviation remains one of the most strategically important and dynamic sectors in international business today.
