New Project Focusing on Food Waste with Interreg Central Europe
The Department of International Business is pleased to share the information that it will take part in the project CIRCUS: Circular Solutions for Keeping Food Waste out of Central Europe’s Schools organized by an interregional cooperation programme Interreg Central Europe that is co-funded by the European Union. The project will start in the spring of 2024 with a total duration of 30 months.
In total, 10 partners from Central Europe, such as Austria, Poland, Italy, Hungary and the Czech Republic, will participate. Participants from the Czech Republic are Prague University of Economics and Business (VSE), Technical University of Ostrava(VŠB) and the non-governmental organisation Zachraň jídlo. The Department of International Business will be represented by our colleagues Ing. Alena Filipová, Ph.D., Ing. Veronika Mokrejšová, Ph.D., Ing. Mgr. Tomáš Sadílek, Ph.D. and Ing. Jiří Zeman, Ph.D.
The project focuses on food waste in school canteens, where up to 40 % of all food is thrown out. The aim is to measure the waste produced in canteens in schools and kindergartens to propose preventative measures to reduce food waste (both on the side of the canteens and the side of the people dining). At the same time, the project focuses on redistributing surpluses and waste processing (insect farms, biogas, etc.). The project also includes an international competition for pupils to motivate them to reduce waste, not only in canteens.
